How to Make a Natural Potpourri Bug Deterrent

Channels / Lotions & Potions

Once made this can either be placed into bags to hang or put into pretty dishes and placed where you want to deter unwanted bugs. I found a few dried off materials I know bugs hate then used essential oils to make the mix more potent. The combination not only looks great but does the job and NO nasty chemicals or sprays were involved. Now that’s an additional bonus!
You will need a small handful (or whatever you have on hand) of:
- Star Anise pods.
- Basil.
- Bay leaves.
- Black pepper.
- Cayenne pepper seeds.
- Cedar wood sprigs.
- Cinnamon sticks.
- Cloves.
- Eucalyptus leaves.
- Lemon peel for colour if desired.

- 1 tbsp Orris root powder which is an excellent fixative.
- Large paper bag to hold all while it fuses & matures.

These are the essential oils I used:
- Aniseed.
- Basil.
- Bay.
- Black pepper.
- Cedar.
- Cinnamon.
- Citronella.
- Cloves.
- Eucalyptus.
- Lemon.

Method:
- Combine & place all dried materials into paper bag.
- Add Orris root powder along with essential oils. I start off with
1 drop each of essential oils and add more as is necessary.
Give it a good mix and leave in a dry place for a couple of weeks before placing in bags to hang or into dishes.
