You've been asking for orchid designs, and today I'm answering — but first, let me ask you something: who wouldn't love a flower that has outlived the dinosaurs and continues to reinvent itself in extraordinary new forms?
The Lady Slipper orchid is unlike almost anything else in the plant world. That distinctive pouch — called a labellum — isn't just beautiful, it's an elaborate insect trap. Bees are lured in by colour and scent, discover there's no nectar inside, and are forced to crawl out past the flower's reproductive organs, carrying pollen as they go. No nectar. Pure deception. Flawless design.
They're also ancient, protected, and almost impossible to transplant from the wild — their survival depends on a delicate relationship with specific soil fungi that cannot be replicated once disturbed. Many species are endangered. The ones we can use and enjoy indoors belong mainly to the Paphiopedilum and Phragmipedium genera — and they are well worth getting to know.
Today I'm pairing a few of these remarkable blooms with complementary ferns and tropical foliage, arranged into a container I've embellished with ceramic leaves and flowers, set against an aged weathered tree stump. Simple, elegant, and completely fitting for a flower this extraordinary.
You'll need:
A lovely shaped container (I embellished mine with ceramic leaves and flowers — check Temu for options)
An aged weathered tree stump
Lady Slipper orchids (Paphiopedilum or Phragmipedium for indoor use)
Ferns and tropical foliage
See the video for how I put it all together.
Happy designing ????
