I’ve had a request from Joan asking if I could film a segment or two on how to make a pot-et-fleur floral design. She had to make one for an upcoming flower show and was appalled at the lack of information available for this type of design.
So, I’ve been investigating and this is what I’ve discovered…

Basically, it’s a French garden design incorporating 2 or more potted plants growing in soil and the other containing fresh cut flowers. They are fabulous designs that just keep on keeping on.

You will need –
A classic urn or container of your choice, big enough to contain soil to plant up plants and one to easily fit down amongst the soil.

The plants I’ve selected are – ivy, baby tears, succulents, maiden hair fern, aucuba, cyclamen, croton etc or potted plants of your desire.
Plus, fresh seasonal flowers.

Method – into the container of your choice – with drainage holes, place stones to further assist drainage.
Soil to fill plus a central container like a bucket which will hold a glass vase. The bucket just makes life easy. I usually place a glass vase containing flowers down inside the bucket.
The plants can continue to grow undisturbed and it’s merely a matter of lifting vase in and out as necessary.
There is not hard and fast rule with this design. Once the soil is in place and the central bucket container placed. Either leave plants in containers or transplant into soil.
The design when completed looks great with highs and low plantings. If planting ivy, place so that it can drape down the sides of urn or container. Ferns resting towards the middle and then plants that grow up be place accordingly.

These floral gardens are meant to represent just that… A garden indoors.
