I walked the pages of my sketchbooks and found a design I originally created for a floral competition in 1978. The best part of reuniting with something from that far back is recognising how much has changed — materials, technology, attitudes, and most importantly, the freedom to let the artist within run loose.
The star of this design is the zebra anthurium — a plain white anthurium transformed with nothing more than a black marker pen. Bold, graphic, and completely unexpected. Paired with lush, contrasting mixed greens, the result is less flower arrangement and more art in a vase.
I hope this one grants you that sense of creative freedom to try something you've never tried before.
Things to gather:
A container of your choice — be brave and pick something unusual; it's the stage for everything that follows
Mixed fresh or artificial foliage in contrasting but connected textures and colours — the more variety the better
3 or 5 white anthuriums
A black marker pen
A cable tie to hold all forms together
