This one started in my powder room! I made a hanging kokodama for a space that gets absolutely no natural light — somewhere a real plant would simply never survive — and everyone who saw it hanging there asked the same question: how did you make that?
So here's the tutorial.
If you have a corner, a hallway, a bathroom, or any space where the sun doesn't shine and plants never thrive, you are going to love this. It's a permanent, fuss-free, surprisingly beautiful solution — and it's much easier to make than it looks.
A quick note before you gather your materials: unless your artificial foliage is UV protected, it will fade and discolour if hung outdoors, so keep that in mind when selecting your plants. Also, the foliage needs to be inserted into the moss ball, so avoid anything with stems that are too firm to push in.
Things to gather:
- A round moss ball — or make your own using an oasis ball covered in moss
- String or rope for the hanger
- Artificial foliage to suit your décor — the more variety in size, colour and texture, the better the finished result
- A hot glue gun (especially useful if hanging outdoors, or for fixing botanicals that won't stay put)
