I love orchids. Their exotic, ancient nature, their endless variety — they never go out of vogue, and they make for some of the most stunning statement floral designs there are. This one's for my own home, but also for everyone who's been asking for more orchid inspiration.
A little context: orchids are the largest family of flowering plants on Earth, with over 25,000 species worldwide. They've outlived the dinosaurs and continue to outperform almost every other flower in sheer diversity. A few favourites worth knowing — the Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) is the easiest for beginners, the Cattleya is famously fragrant and known as the "Queen of Orchids," the Vanda is prized for its vivid colour, and the Ludisia (jewel orchid) is grown not for its flowers but for its velvety, copper-veined leaves. There are dozens more, each with their own personality.
This particular design is for my own home. I finished the renovation almost two years ago and have been slowly hunting for the right permanent orchids to add the finishing touch ever since — and I finally found them a few weeks ago on Temu, if you're after some yourself.
Things to gather:
- A container of your choice — I used a classic urn shape I decoupaged months ago, knowing it would eventually home this design
- A few tropical-inspired leaves
- Ferns and plant forms to enhance the flowers
