The requests for beach themed floral designs have been wonderful and plentiful — and I'm thrilled to keep dipping into my workbook of stored ideas.

This one is for Elizabeth, who lives in Cornwall in England, and for everyone else who has been asking for a design featuring shells, hydrangeas, and feather grass. Here in New Zealand we call it toitoi — you may know it as Prince of Wales feather grass — and it is absolutely perfect for a coastal arrangement.

The real magic in this design is the double vase technique. A smaller cylinder vase sits inside a larger glass vase, leaving a cavity between the two that gets filled with gathered shells. The effect through the glass is beautiful — and it means the shells become part of the design, not just a finishing touch on top.

Things to gather:

A large glass vase
A smaller cylinder vase, marginally shorter than the outer vase — with enough space around it to fill with shells
Shells to fill the cavity — gathered or purchased, whatever suits your décor
Hydrangeas in a colour to suit — I used pale blue, white, and a couple of shell cream heads to connect back with the shells
A couple of stems of toitoi or Prince of Wales feather grass
A few larger shells to place amongst the hydrangea blooms

See the video for how I put it all together.

Happy designing ????
